There was a time when it looked like we’d busted a gut for nothing. The first half an hour was so one-sided the game had all the makings of a mismatch but we’d only scored once. A rare bungle by Ally and it was one-all, game on and all to play for as they say. We never stopped though, it was graft, graft and more graft but it didn’t look as if we’d get our reward. Klopp sent on Shaq, game changer? Maybe, maybe not but whatever the visitors from the squalor junctions of the M62 were suddenly down and out as he banged in two albeit with the help of a couple deflections but who cared? Anfield wallowed in Mancunian misery; what a wonderful world this is.
Thank god for the hands of Alisson; his save in the dying embers put us into the knockouts and made the club maybe another £20m in TV rights. Sadio Mane missed enough chances in this game to have had us all in a state of panic, which we were, till Ally made the save. On another day Mane might have scored six but we had to settle for one from Mo and left the ground with our fingernails reduced so much they were almost our knuckles. Still, it’s what football’s all about innit?
We’ve come a long way since that fateful day…the day we lost 4-3 after being 3-1 up & coasting. We might not have coasted in this one but we probably still had a bit of juice left come the end of a comprehensive four goal win. Might Mo [again] scored three and we welcomed an own goal. No we didn’t coast but we just kept the locals at a safe distance and went top of the pile.
