Editorial Issue 317

Before you ask, no I’m not happy and that’s got nothing to do with losing four Premier League games on the trot. This issue was planned to be out in time for the Manchester United game, but the weather intervened as did a plague of half ‘n half scarf wearing tourists. Trying to sell fanzines when it’s raining is a pain in the rear but not as big a pain as trying to convince someone who’s never been to Anfield that they shouldn’t be displaying the colours of any side other than Liverpool let alone the colours of Everton and Manchester United. A lot of these fans are coming at the expense of what I will term real fans who know what these fixtures mean but they are being frozen out by LFC.
The atmosphere against Manchester United was, to me, one of the worst I’ve known for this fixture and instead of a bear pit the opposition turned up to a village fete. I know why the club does it. They want the tourist who will happily spend a few hundred quid in the shop, not the likes of me who begrudges even buying an over-expensive pie. The club trade off what they call The Anfield Experience but what is that in the modern game? Before just about every European game, they talk about the unique Anfield atmosphere and churn out stories of Inter Milan, St. Etienne, Chelsea and Barca and, yes, they were special. What about some of the more recent games when the only atmosphere has been provided by the visitors. What Liverpool tells the world is about yesterday, not today. The dilution of the atmosphere is down to the club.
It’s 15-years since FSG under their old badge came along and saved our club. Something that the various fan groups had been fighting for since the cowboys rode into town armed with false promises and debt. The next aim of the fan groups should be to save our support. Going to Anfield now for certain games is like drinking watered down beer and the reason is because of where the tickets go.
Oh yes, football. I’ll just repeat what I said in my editorial of Issue 316: Any result the mass media, the national press, TV or the keyboard warriors feel falls below expectations will be scrutinised in every detail and knives will be sharpened. The project Liverpool have invested in isn’t just for today it’s about the tomorrows as well. The FSG investment should be judged in the years ahead and not now. However, I must admit, I can understand the current mood.
After the shocking show down at Brentford the support does have a right to know what’s going on with certain players and there have been a few odd team selections and even odder substitutions. Less than ten games into the season we should stop worrying about the opposition and worry about ourselves.
JJP: As we approached the nightmare that is Halloween, I just wanted Liverpool to stop the Trick or Treat. It’s too scarry.
