At the end of the transfer window, I thought we had the best squad of players we’ve had for years and looked forward to games like this in the League Cup when we’d send out a quality side of ‘fringe’ players plus a youngster or two. I got that bit wrong. I never expected us to be picking a side that was designed to get beat. Nobody can criticise the players who did their best.
