Welcome to Issue 325 of Red All Over The Land.
I’ve got to make a confession because up until a month or so ago all I knew about Amazon was that they delivered parcels but I’ve never placed an order with them although the wife has. If you’d mentioned Jeff Bezos was coming to Liverpool I’d have probably asked who he played for. As for Amit Bhatia and Eduardo Saverin you’d have received a blank look. However, it appears that this little group have come up with the name 1892 Holdings [Houlding would have read better] and will be investing a billion or so £ [$] into Liverpool FC and if you believe what you read they could have the option to buy for the princely sum of £6b.
I understand that the SOS will endeavour to speak with the club to see where this leaves us – us being the real support. Unfortunately, the way I see things is that FSG own the club and if someone is going to plough another fortune into their coffers they’re going to take it. If someone is going to offer them £6b for what they bought for £300m [sounds like small change now] they’re going to give it a bit of thought. I don’t want it, I don’t like it but John Henry isn’t going to worry about what I think. I come from the era when Butchers, Bakers and Candlestick makers along with the Moores family ran football clubs and I wish that was the case today.
I dare say there are some Liverpool fans across all the continents, including the UK, rubbing their hands together thinking with a few billion more in the treasure chest the club could go out and buy this player, that player and success on the field would follow suit. They won’t care where the money comes from as long as the club gets the trophies they crave and regarding the club that’s the kind of support they now want. Football is no longer a game, a sport, it’s a hospitality business, a tourist attraction and a rich man’s plaything. The real supporters, the ones that made the game what it was, not what it is, are a minority and as each season passes, they [we] become more and more of a minority.
On the pitch against Newcastle our shortcomings were there for all to see but we didn’t lose. The earache that some players and even the manager received shows last season hasn’t been forgotten nor forgiven. In the modern game patience isn’t a virtue is it.
A lot of credit to the Newcastle club for the Kevin Keegan tribute and I’m glad our club, our fans could be part of it. We give our thoughts on KK in this issue.
Against Forest it was more of the same but we got out of jail again with a late leveller. The new Vice Chairman was there and if he knows anything about football he’ll know what we want. Liverpool say, This Means More. Those who are real supporters will be telling the club, We Want More. Players, that is.
I’m sure Andoni has let it be known what he wants and we need but managers dictating transfer policy has long gone. It’s now down to some suit and tie wearing individual with a fancy title doing the managers shopping for him. It’s a bit like me going to the supermarket doing the weekend shop and telling the boss “Look what I’ve bought”! And she says “Why.”
The transfer window will be shut when I send this copy to Paul the Printer so that’s something to cover in the next issue but Barcola could be coming.
