Has The PL Got Any Guts

After what seemed like an eternity the verdict of Manchester City has been announced. That is, they have been found ‘guilty’ on 114 out of 115 of the charges laid against them. The furore that followed was understandable with the world and its mate all having an opinion and, of course, a thousand suggestions about what to do next followed. Strip the club of their titles, Cups and everything else that has come their way during the period under investigation. Relegate them, hit them hard with fines but it won’t be that easy. The Premier League have already created a precedent with their handling of Chelsea. They knew what was going on at Chelsea but didn’t do anything about it when Abramovich was around. They only acted when they knew they had the government on side when sanctions were imposed on Russia and Russian billionaires. This time they’re not just dealing with a football club or an individual but Saudi Royalty. Two governments could be involved and who knows where it will end. Manchester City will appeal, how long is that going to take. What good would a fine do? If they strip them of their titles who’s that punishing. City reaped rich financial rewards from the TV money, are they going to give it back, and the bonuses paid to players etc; etc. The list will go on and on.

It’s time the Premier League took a long hard look at itself because they’re just as guilty. They must have known what was happening or had their suspicions. Those emails surely gave them a clue. How will UEFA react? After all they wanted to act on City but got told they couldn’t. It’s a farce that’s been allowed to happen and it’s the game that is suffering. As a Liverpool fan I don’t want asterisk titles they will mean nothing. The Premier League has dug a hole, how they get out of it is what football will find out eventually, but nobody should be holding their breath.
