Welcome to Issue 314 of Red All Over The Land.
The intentions were simple. Issue 314 was going to be a continuation of the celebration and a look forward to the excitement and hope which every new season brings. The events of Thursday July 3rd changed all of that.
As fans we lost a player, the team and the coaching staff lost a lot more. I’m not going to try and comprehend what his surviving family will be going through.
His passing brought football together and that is comforting, I’m sure. He wasn’t just a Liverpool player, he was a Portugal international, there was Porto, there was Wolves and the clubs he played for before making the bigger picture. Portugal, and the rest of us will all have what will now be cherished memories. We must thank all of football for their compassion, that is players, coaches, owners and fans. It doesn’t ease the pain, but it helps us to know these people are there.
Eventually, as a football club and as a fanbase we will move on. It won’t be easy, but it will be a necessity. For his immediate family it will be harder because they lost his brother too.
In moments like these, we are reminded that football is more than just a game; it is a community bound by shared joy and collective sorrow. The outpouring of tributes from around the world spoke volumes about the person he was, both on and off the pitch. Stories emerged — of kindness in the dressing room, of determination during training sessions, of laughter shared with teammates and supporters alike.
There is a certain unity that loss brings, a gentle strength found when hearts break together. Anfield, and every stadium he graced, will feel emptier for his absence, yet fuller for his legacy. Let us hold tight to the moments he gave us — the goals, the celebrations, the unwavering spirit — and continue to support one another just as he would have wanted.
This Issue of Red All Over The Land is intended to be a celebration of the player who will now forever be Our Number 20. His song will always be sung; therefore, his memory will always be with us at Anfield.
