Welcome to issue 324 of Red All Over The Land.
At the final home game of last season there seemed an air of inevitability that Arne Slot would be leaving. Within a week the feeling became fact. The managerial change [forget all the head coach stuff] does obviously get mentioned in this issue but I decided not to dwell upon it too much because we all know what last season was like and there’s no real reason to discuss it any further. It’s over, let it go.
Welcome then, Andoni Iraola who has moved from the sleepy suburbs and retirement homes of Bournemouth to the goldfish bowl that is Liverpool and Anfield where football never sleeps. There’s no need for me to say anything because he will have already been briefed on expectations and a few million pundits, the mass media and the inhabitants of the keyboard jungle will have already bent his ear.
My expectations this season are the usual. A top-4 finish and a trophy or two will keep me satisfied.
At the time of putting this Fanzine together there was just the one new signing, Víctor Muñoz from Osasuna but the manager hopes there will be more. There is Jérémy Jacquet, pre-signed in January but he’s not been seen in public yet as he recovers from the injury picked up while playing in France. In keeping with what seem to be our traditions Muñoz also picked up a knock while with Spain. As we know Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni are still on the sick list. Konaté walked away so the head count looks a bit short.
In this issue we welcome a few new contributors and I hope they stay with us. Like the club I’m always looking for fresh talent to enhance the pages of the Fanzine. So, if anyone is reading this, why not think about it. I plead for articles with a degree of humour, I enjoy sarcasm, I don’t like stats because everyone knows them and half the time, they’re a waste of space. So, facts not stats. We don’t do rumour either. Another good cartoonist would help and remember what is on social media today is forgotten tomorrow. Things in print stay in print.
The World Cup won’t be getting too much of a mention in this Fanzine. The perfect example of why football and politics, not to mention football and FIFA should pay a visit to the divorce courts. My viewing time totalled less than one hour and that was only because I was conscripted.
The sad news of the passing of Kevin Keegan came as a shock. Time and space mean we can’t pay a full tribute in this issue, but we will pay our respects in Issue 325 which should be out for the home game against Fulham. Our next Red All Over You Tube on Tuesday August 18th will also feature a tribute to King Kev.
